Brigham Young University-Hawaii, or BYU-H for short, is a private, undergraduate co-educational university in La'ie, which is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the Koolauloa District on the island of Oahu in Honolulu County, in the US state of Hawaii, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 5000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
BYU-H was established in September, 1955, as Church College of Hawaii, in order to accommodate the burgeoning LDS population in the Territory of Hawaii. Today, Brigham Young University-Hawaii, has an enrollment estimated at a number of approximately 2500 students, to whom it offers various educational programs, and according to U.S. News and World Report, is 4th in the Western region of the U.S. among institutions offering bachelor's degrees, also being listed as the no.1 ''best value'' in the region, being the only Hawaiian school to make a top-tier listing.
The athletic teams from BUY-h are known as the ''Seasiders'', who compete in NCAA Division II, in the traditional college sports for men and women, including in basketball, golf, softball, cross country, tennis and volleyball. Among the teams' most notable achievements there are 2 women's volleyball and 9 tennis championships, of which 2 have been won by the men's team and 7 have been won by the women's team. The distinctive colors of the Seasiders are crimson and gold, and their mascot is Kimo the Gecko.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni form BYU-H, there are: Young Bo Chang - awarded with the National Medal from the Republic of Korea and two Presidential Medals (one from President Roh Tae Woo; one from President Kim Dae Jung) for his international work in the deep sea fishing industry, Randall W. Boothe - Director of Light of the World and Faith in Every Footstep; former director of Disney's All American College Singers, Dancers and Show Band and artistic director for the Young Ambassadors, and George E. Wahlen - Medal of Honor recipient for heroic efforts in Battle of Iwo Jima.
